Beyond the Pew Archive - 10 Prayers (chapters 3 - 4)

Reflection Questions·

Ten ·Prayers God Always Says Yes To

(Ch 3) What’s in It for Me?· God, Outdo Me in Generosity

“If you give something you own away to somebody else, God will always give you back twothings in return.”

1) Of the two “equal but opposite” spiritual errors regarding money: “the gospel of poverty” and “the gospel of prosperity,” which one is your tendency?

2) Money can be dangerous.· “[It] has the power to separate a person from God in a way that few other things in life can.”· How can money be a blessing in your life?· A danger?

3) God will not be outdone in generosity.· Have you ever “put God to the test” by giving generously when you thought you couldn’t afford to do so? ·What happened?

4) What does it mean to “give from your need, not from your abundance?”· Do you remember a time when you have done this?

(Ch 4) I Can’t Take It Anymore:· God, Get Me Through This Suffering

“God says yes to all who come to him for help and comfort when they are in the midst of such trials….· Not a way out of the suffering itself – but from the utter, black hopelessness that suffering can lead us into.”

1) When was a time in which God offered you an “escape hatch” amidst your suffering?

2) “[W]hen we have to face pain in our own lives, we have access to all the strength, peace, and courage that sustained Christ through his Passion and death.”· Looking back on your life, when do you see only Christ’s footprints in the sand?

3) “[God] ‘allows’ us to do almost anything we want – no matter how much damage we do to ourselves and to others in the process.”· How has this chapter helped you to understand the problem of suffering in light of “the fall” and our “free will?”

4) What helps you “get through” suffering?· What are some healthy coping mechanisms?·Unhealthy ones?
