Religious Education 6-8 Grade Parent Guidelines

Arrival:

There will be two drive-through drop-off zones, one on the North side and one on the South side.  All students need to report to the cafeteria before class.  We start at 6:30, which means your child needs to be in the cafeteria at that time, not the parking lot.

Dismissal:

Students will be dismissed at 8:00p.m.  You will need to park in a space and have your child walk to your car. You may park in either the north or south parking lot, but you must park!  There will be NO drive-through pick-up. Please be sure your child knows which lot you will pick them up in.  Texting them with your location should not be an option as cell phones are not permitted at Religious Ed.

Attendance/Absences:
Students are expected to come to class and Journey regularly.  They are expected to be on time, have materials (folder or binder & Bible) in hand and ready to learn. Multiple absences will prevent your child from receiving sacraments with his/her classmates.  Please contact Pam Riordan if circumstances arise which conflict with your child’s regular Religious Ed. time.

Materials:
Sixth Grade Students have a textbook that will be kept at St. Michael to use during class.  All sixth graders will receive a red folder with pages that coincide with the textbook. This folder will go home each week and needs to be brought back each week.

Students will also receive a grade appropriate prayer book to take home.  Prayer is an integral part of Religious Education but we do not spend time memorizing prayers in class. Please take some time to look through your child’s folder.

First Year Confirmation (typically 7thgrade)

Students are to use their binder & Bible from 1stYear Confirmation and we will add to it.  Students are expected to bring their binders and Bibles to and from class each week! Please take some time to look through your child’s binder.

Communication Home:

The Religious Ed. Office will use e-mail almost entirely to communicate with parents.  Please be sure that we have an accurate e-mail address on file so you will receive notifications about schedule changes, class reminders, service hour opportunities, Religious Ed. newsletters and other parish events. In addition, teachers may send home notes/e-mails about individual classes.

Cell Phones:

All cells phones are to be left at home. A cell phone in a pocket is a huge distraction and temptation. Students are better able to focus when they leave their cell phones at home.

Crucifix Prayer Program:

Every class will have a crucifix (in a zip lock bag), with an instruction card, and a prayer.  This will go home with a different student each week.  Students are asked to take the crucifix home, place it in a prominent place and pray the prayer with the family each day that week and return it to class the following week.

Behavior:

For the most part we have very acceptable behavior in our classes.  Sometimes there are breaches.  When this occurs teachers are being asked to Correct immediately with respect.  Talk to the student privately if there is a recurrence. Refer the student to the coordinator, if change does not occur.  If the coordinator becomes involved, parents will be notified.

Dress Code:

Students are to come dressed appropriately and observe the same dress code as they do during the school day.  As during the school day baseball caps are not to be worn in the building.

Weather:

The only time we will not have class on Sunday is if the building is not open due to weather. In the event of weather related cancellations, an e-mail will be sent out and a message will be recorded on the Christian Education Office number (402-3940.)
