Family Faith Ideas

Every Catholic home needs a bible

 New American or New Jerusalem, share a story from it at least once a week.

Every Catholic home needs a Catechism

Go to Mass

Go to Mass every Sunday, teach children how to behave by setting a good example, use the hymnal and teach your children to use Children’s Bible for young children

Check out the Bulletin

Scripture Reflection and Question of the Week- do the family reflection after Mass on Sunday

Read the scripture readings before you go to Mass

Have a sacramental somewhere in your house

Have a statue of Mary or another Saint, Holy Water font on a wall, crucifix etc.

Read about the Saints

Go to Mass on vacation

Take some time to look around and compare to our church

Visit the Nelson-Atkins

Look at religious paintings – it is free!

Share Stories

Share stories of your Catholic faith growing up. 

 Go to Holy Day Masses

Share Sacramental Moments

 Show your child pictures of family sacramental moments (marriage, baptism, First Communion, etc)

Keep the Lord’s Day Holy 

 things as a family

 Participate in a social activity at church

Participate in a devotional at church

Adoration, Rosary at 4:30 pm on Saturdays, Stations of the Cross on Fridays of Lent

 Give up something for Lent

Talk about it as a family

Tithe and teach your children to tithe

 Go to Reconciliation as a family at least one time per year

 Watch movies together as a family and talk about them in terms of values

Eat together as a family and always pray before meals

Teach your children to pray for others

 Do concrete Acts of Service for others

 As you are able volunteer for a ministry in the parish or if you volunteer in other places talk about how you are being Christ by serving others

 Visit a religious order

  (a convent, seminary or abbey)  Conception, MO , Clyde, MO and Atchison, KS have great places to visit.

 Talk to your child about vocations

Ask “What do you think God is calling you to do” not “What do you want to be when you grow up”

 Attend a concert of church hymns

or a faith component, ie “Handel’s Messiah”
