Community Service and Outreach Committee

Whether it is coordinating monthly theme visits and cleaning days at an inner-city family care center, preparing and serving meals to the area’s hungry, collecting food for a local food pantry, praying for those in need, or providing meals to parish families during difficult times, the St. Michael Parish Community Service and Outreach (CSO) Program is leading the way.

Our CSO Program leads the St. Michael community in service and outreach efforts as symbols of Christ’s love and care by identifying needs, promoting opportunities and educating parishioners. The program offers a variety of opportunities for parishioners to get involved, one time or on an ongoing basis.

A Little History of Christmas Families, Inc.·

28 years ago Daniel Jacobs "accidentally" started a project to help a few families he ran into while out in the field working customer service for Kansas City Power & Light.  He knew he couldn't do it all alone so he wrote a letter to his friends asking for help.....This year this organization helped 1380 Red Bag children and 50 families.  It's quite a process- there are the Red Bag Ladies (individuals who help interview families and find sponsors) and deserve special thanks, as well as a large corporation (that asked not to be named) that helped with the letters and mailing.  Frontier Bag Company, who created the Red Bags years ago for Daniel and have supported him since, and Frye-Wagner Movers loaned their trucks and drives to the cause. Then come all the individual volunteers who collect the bags as they come in, then those who sort them and hand them out to social workers, teachers, police officers, grandparents, clergy and foster parents. Finally, another batch of volunteers who know the families pick up the bags and store them until Christmas when they are delivered.
