Community Service and Outreach Committee (CSO)
St. Mary's Food Kitchen
As a parish family St Michael has been serving a hot lunch meal on the 1stSunday of every month for over 10 years. Because of the popularity of this community service project at St Michael we joined forces in January 2010 with Grace Covenant Presbyterian Church for another service day on the 3rdSaturday of the month. On each service date we typically serve between 275 and 325 people of which about 10% are children, 15% are homeless and most of the remaining clients are unemployed or underemployed. For some it is the only hot meal of the day and for others it may be the only meal of the day. A typical Sunday morning at St. Mary’s food kitchen includes 20 servers, 30 parishioners who have prepared a casserole and about 15 parishioners who have prepared a dessert. St Michael encourages families to serve together and welcome children over the age of 7 who will be accompanied by a parent on a one to one basis. Throughout the year, many different groups have the privilege of preparing and serving food to those in need.

How to get involved
To Serve
Sign up to serve at the food kitchen after weekend Masses one week prior to the 1stSunday service date. Separate sign-up sheets are available for both the 1st Sunday and 3rdSaturday at that time. Because of the popularity of this Community, Service and Outreach project for St Mary’s Food Kitchen the sign-up sheets are rotated between the 5:00 Saturday evening Mass and the 7:30 and 9:00 Sunday morning Masses. Rotating the sign-up sheet availability gives the people that attend a later Sunday Mass a chance to volunteer.
To Prepare Food
Pick up a casserole pan with a recipe or a dessert request after weekend Masses one week prior to service date.
Click here for Chicken ~n~ Stuff recipe.
On the 1st Sunday service we meet in the north circle parking area by 9:10.
On the 3rd Saturday we meet at the east entrance of Father Porter Hall at 9:10.
Basic information about St. Mary’s Food Kitchen
St Mary’s Food Kitchen has served well over 1,000,000 meals since its inception in 1982. It started in the basement of St Mary’s Catholic Church at 5thand Ann in Kansas City, Kansas. In 1997 it moved 6 blocks to the Wilhemina Gill Multi-Service Center at 645 Nebraska to better serve their clients after St Mary’s Church was closed. It is one of several food kitchens in the metropolitan area and is also one of the largest serving approximately 300 people every day of the year. St Michael is one of 51 churches and 1 synagogue that has volunteered to serve the hungry at St Mary’s Food Kitchen every day of every month since its inception in 1982.
